I find that painting human portraits aren't that much different than painting animal portraits or a landscape. Thay're all made up of shapes and colors with contours, peaks and valleys that the light plays off of. So it really doesn't matter if it's the texture of a tree leaf or the texture of a human hand. I just paint them for what they are.
Every human and animal has their own personality, and it's always my goal to capture that personality in my portraits.
Even when working with a client by email, given enough information and a few stories about the subject and enough photos, I can get a good feel for how the client sees their subject to be painted. With this information I can capture a little personality and create a one of a kind piece of art for my client.
There is something about painting someone's pet.
It becomes a real personal connection with the the client when you talk to them about, what is clearly, a family member.
Our yellow lab, JJ, was painted along the Carson River with a stick in his mouth. He was 8 weeks old and it was an image I wanted to hold onto and share with everyone.
If you have one of these cherished images of your pet and would like to have a painting created from it, please contact me.
